The Ministry of Education in the UAE has adopted a ‘code of conduct for education professionals’. It contains a set of principles and ethical values aimed at raising awareness and enhancing the responsibility of education sector staff.
Code of Conduct for workers in the General Education Sector
- Encourage positive values in students, safeguard them against being drawn into ideas deemed unacceptable by UAE’s society and promote the principles of tolerance and acceptance of others.
- Encourage students to highly regard the UAE’s journey of development and prosperity. Encourage them to actively participate in national activities and events.
- Commit to protecting children from neglect, exploitation, bullying and all forms of abuse.
- Avoid disclosing confidential information about the students and their families. Avoid spreading false news and rumors. Refrain from committing any verbal or physical violence against students under all circumstances.
- Demonstrate positive behavior in dealing with parents and the community.
- Respect and make yourself aware of the Emirati culture and traditions and highly regard the values of Islam.
- Respect cultural, religious and ethnic diversity of the workplace. Refrain from committing any behavioral or verbal offense against your colleagues, the educational institution and its employees.
- Refrain from using, possessing or under the influence of any unauthorized substances, including smoking in work place.
- Refrain from spreading socially unacceptable behaviors and discussing genders identity, homosexuality or any other behavior deemed unacceptable to the UAE’s society.
- Adhere to appropriate, non-revealing clothing, respecting the traditions of the UAE and showing a respectable image of workers in the educational sector.
The ministry said it is a “roadmap for every teacher, leader, administrator, and worker” in the UAE’s education sector. It further stressed that educators have a “direct … responsibility in building generations, establishing an institutional culture based on ethical standards that enhance awareness”.
All education professionals must comply with the code of conduct when performing their duties.
The guidelines are based on five key values: Honesty and dedication; sincerity and integrity; justice and equality; compassion and forgiveness; and respect.
